Peter Beard

Peter Beard is a distinguished British ceramic artist whose career spans over five decades. He studied industrial and furniture design at Ravensbourne College of Art in London from 1970 to 1973, where he also explored ceramics. In 1975, he established his first studio in Kent, focusing on sculptural pieces. His work is characterised by strong, simple forms adorned with intricate, layered glazes that create complex, textured surfaces. Beard draws inspiration from landscapes and ancient artefacts, particularly those of Egypt, infusing his pieces with a timeless quality.

Throughout his career, Beard has exhibited internationally, with his work featured in numerous public collections, including the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Cologne, Germany, and the Die Neue Sammlung in Munich, Germany. He has been recognised with several awards, such as the INAX European Design Prize in Japan in 1996 and a Silver Medal at the International Biennale of Ceramic Art in Vallauris, France, in 2002. In addition to his ceramic creations, Beard has expanded his practice to include bronze and stone sculptures, further showcasing his versatility and commitment to exploring different materials and forms.

Beard's approach to ceramics is both contemplative and experimental. He spends considerable time sketching and developing ideas, resulting in pieces that are both contemporary and deeply rooted in historical influences. His meticulous process involves layering glazes and using wax resist techniques to create patterns and textures that complement the form of each piece. Some of his works involve grinding back layers of coloured clays and glazes to reveal intricate patterns, a technique that can take up to six months to complete.
