Terri Smart

Terri Smart is a Surrey-based ceramic artist renowned for her vibrant and distinctive pieces that capture the essence of the natural world. Her work encompasses a diverse range of subjects, including animals, birds, boats, African figures, and raku smoke-fired pieces. Each creation is meticulously hand-built using textured stoneware clays, decorated with coloured slips, oxides, and glazes, and fired to 1260C. This process results in unique, tactile sculptures that invite viewers to engage with the intricate details and dynamic forms.

Smart's artistic journey began in 1990 while working as an architect in Hong Kong, where she discovered her passion for ceramics. Influenced by natural elements such as wind and water, she often explores the contrasts between nature and human intervention in her work. For example, her boat pieces highlight the insignificance of human vessels against the vastness of the sea. She operates from her secluded Surrey studio, overlooking a garden and fields that serve as constant sources of inspiration for her seed pod forms and the birds that visit her space.

Beyond her studio practice, Smart is an active member of the Surrey Sculpture Society and the Wey Ceramics Society.
