Jonathan Lawes is a British artist and designer based in south-east London, renowned for his distinctive abstract compositions that reflect a deep appreciation for geometry, shape, and pattern. His work predominantly utilises the silkscreen printing process, allowing him to experiment with layering techniques to create complex, textured surfaces. Lawes's prints are characterised by their graphic edge, vibrant colour palettes, and meticulous attention to detail, resulting in pieces that are both visually striking and thoughtfully composed.
After graduating from Leeds Arts University in 2009 with a BA in Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern Design, Lawes spent nearly a decade living and working in Berlin. This period significantly influenced his artistic development, providing exposure to diverse artistic movements and practices. In 2018, he returned to the UK to further develop his practice. His work has been exhibited widely, and he has collaborated with an extensive list of clients, including COS, The Conran Shop, Gandia Blasco, Petit-Pli, and Joseph Joseph.
Lawes's creative process is notably organic, often beginning without a predetermined outcome. He allows compositions to evolve naturally, guided by his genuine enthusiasm for the printing process. This approach results in abstract works that are dynamic and engaging, inviting viewers to explore the interplay of form and colour. His dedication to his craft and continuous exploration of printmaking techniques have established him as a prominent figure in contemporary abstract art.
