Jane Muir is a British ceramic artist celebrated for her whimsical, hand-painted figures that offer a witty and uncluttered observation of the world. Her sculptures often depict stylised human forms adorned with birds, flowers, or other natural elements, reflecting a playful yet thoughtful engagement with everyday life. Muir's work is characterised by its subtle colour palettes and textured surfaces, achieved through hand-building techniques and stoneware glazes, lending her pieces a distinctive, tactile quality.
Educated at Central St Martins School of Art and the Royal College of Art, Muir has exhibited widely since completing her studies in 1992. Her work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions across the UK, Europe, America, and Japan, including notable displays at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In 1997, she received a Crafts Council Grant, enabling her to establish her current studio in Peckham, South London.
Muir's sculptures are not about specific individuals but are personifications of character, allowing viewers to identify familiar personas within her work. This approach, combined with her use of gentle colours and rough textures, creates pieces that are immensely appealing yet never sentimental.
