Peter Hayes, born in 1946, is a distinguished British sculptor and ceramicist celebrated for his innovative approach to ceramics, particularly his use of experimental firing techniques such as raku and saggar firing. His artistic journey is deeply intertwined with his global travels and life experiences. Motivated by a profound curiosity about the origins of ceramic art and its ancient ties to the Earth, he has immersed himself in communities worldwide where ceramic traditions span centuries. In keeping with the raku ceramics tradition, Hayes works exclusively with natural earth clay and the flames of the kiln to create contemporary pieces.
Hayes's work is characterised by its monolithic vessel forms, which are achieved through the submersion of raku-fired pieces in flowing and tidal waters. This process results in cracked and blackened surfaces that are polished to create an integral patina. The distinctive appearance of his ceramic works reflects his habit of submerging pieces in the flowing river beside his studio or sending them to Cornwall to be washed in the sea for months at a time. The water washes minerals such as copper and metal oxides into the basic white clay with which Hayes works, creating a characteristic green-blue "blush" in his sculptures along with random elements that make every piece unique.
